Mini splits suit homes without ducts, additions and converted garages, and rooms the central system never keeps comfortable. Our licensed technicians handle the whole job, from choosing the indoor units to the final test.

How Does a Mini Split Work?

A heat-pump mini split is a heat pump split into two parts. The outdoor unit holds the compressor; each indoor head holds a coil and a fan and mounts on a wall, in the ceiling or near the floor. A small bundle of refrigerant lines, a power cable and a condensate drain runs between them through a small opening in the wall, so there is no ductwork to build. Because it is a heat pump, the same system cools in summer and heats in winter, and for climates with moderate heating and cooling needs the DOE describes heat pumps as an energy-efficient alternative to separate furnaces and air conditioners (DOE Energy Saver).

When Is a Ductless Mini Split the Right Choice?

No ducts in the house

Older homes heated by wall or floor furnaces can add cooling and efficient heat without opening walls for ductwork.

Additions, ADUs and garage conversions

A new room gets its own system instead of overloading the main one.

Rooms that never feel right

A bonus room over the garage or a sunny office gets its own head and its own temperature.

Room-by-room control

Each indoor head has its own setting, so unused rooms are not conditioned.

Comparing it with ducted systems? Read mini split vs central air, or see AC installation for central systems.

Single-Zone or Multi-Zone?

Single-zone

One outdoor unit and one indoor head: the simplest way to condition one room or an open area.

Multi-zone

One outdoor unit serving several indoor heads, each with its own control: fewer units outside, more rooms covered.

Several single-zone systems

Separate outdoor units for different parts of the house, so one unit failing does not take down the whole house.

Indoor Unit Styles

Wall-mounted

The most common head, mounted high on a wall.

Ceiling cassette

Sits flush in the ceiling and spreads air in several directions.

Floor console

Low on the wall, useful under windows or in attic rooms with sloped ceilings.

Slim ducted

Hidden above a ceiling with short ducts to one or a few rooms.

What Affects the Cost of Mini Split Installation?

Number of indoor heads

Each head adds equipment, line set and labor.

Capacity and efficiency

Sized from the rooms' load and rated in SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating (HSPF explained).

Line set routing

Longer or hidden runs through attics and walls take more time than a short run through one exterior wall.

Electrical work

The outdoor unit needs its own circuit, and some panels need more capacity.

Mounting and drainage

Brackets or a pad outside, and a condensate path for every head.

Permit

In the City of Los Angeles, installing heating and cooling equipment needs a mechanical HVAC permit from LADBS (LADBS); other cities issue their own.

How Is a Mini Split Sized?

Each indoor head is sized for the room it serves, and the outdoor unit for the total, from a load calculation that weighs insulation, windows, sun and air leakage (ACCA Manual J). An oversized head cycles on and off and leaves humidity behind; an undersized one runs without catching up.

When Is a Mini Split Not the Best Fit?

If the house already has sound, well-sized ductwork, a central air conditioner or a ducted heat pump usually serves every room with one indoor unit; see AC installation. And a home that needs many rooms conditioned can end up with more indoor heads than a ducted system has registers, so price both.

What Does a Typical Mini Split Installation Involve?

1. Load and layout

The rooms are measured and each head is placed where its air reaches the space.

2. Outdoor unit

Set on a pad or wall brackets with clearance for airflow and service.

3. Indoor heads

Mounted on their brackets, with the line set and drain routed through the wall.

4. Line set and vacuum

The refrigerant lines are connected, pressure-tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.

5. Power and controls

The dedicated circuit is connected and each head's remote or thermostat is set up.

6. Start-up

Each zone is run in cooling and heating and checked at the head.

Once it runs, a yearly tune-up keeps the coils and filters clean, and if an existing system acts up, see heat pump repair.

Mini Split Questions

Do I need a permit for a mini split?

In the City of Los Angeles, yes: LADBS requires a mechanical HVAC permit for installing heating and cooling equipment. Other cities, such as Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena, permit through their own building departments.

Can a heat-pump mini split replace my furnace?

In many rooms it can, since a heat-pump mini split heats as well as cools; for a whole-home change, compare it with a ducted system on our heat pump installation page.

Do you install ductless AC across Los Angeles?

Yes, from Woodland Hills across the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles; see our service area.
